Call for Papers : SHCG Conference 2009
Call for Papers
SHCG at 35 - The Past Present & Future of Social History
Annual Conference Leeds, 9-11 July 2009
SHCG is 35 years old so this year’s conference will reflect on the past, present and future of social history in museums. The conference will include landmark case studies, highlighting some of the most successful social history work in museums to date. In addition to milestones in social history curatorship, the conference will look to the future, asking ‘what next for social history’?
SHCG are pleased to invite proposals for presentations which address one or more of the core conference themes:
o Collecting social history. What have been the dominant collecting trends, what has been collected, how was it collected, why? What is being collected now, priorities for the future?
o Exhibiting social history. How have exhibitions and galleries changed, display methods, innovative interpretation, venues, and key exhibitions.
o Engaging through social history. Reminiscence, audiences, community consultation, sense of ownership, partnerships, legacies and getting people excited about their history.
Please email proposals for presentations to both Adam Bell and Michelle Day, Conference Organisers, at adam.bell@twmuseums.org.uk and michelle.day@hullcc.gov.uk by 19 February 2009.
Proposals for a 30-40 minute presentation should include a 200 word summary of the presentation, contact details and institutional affiliation (if any).
Speakers’ travel costs can be reimbursed (standard class fare) and attendance on the day of speaking is free.
The Social History Curators Group was formed to improve the status and provision of social history in museums and the standards of collections, research, display and interpretation. The group acts as a forum for sharing ideas and practical experience with others involved in social and local history in museums.
